Around 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Police then discovered numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; officials are presently not informed of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to resolve the case" and have requested to the public for details.
A high-ranking representative said the incident made him without words and required to be resolved quickly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the killing of nine victims by a shooter focusing on individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
