The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
