Whenever a prominent honors show nears, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
