This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a dare for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard biological terror, but within Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when the couple move from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
